Mecspe 2022: the heart of manufacturing

Everything is ready for the 20th edition of MECSPE, the most important exhibition in Italy dedicated to manufacturing. Organized by Senaf, it runs from the 9th to 11th June in BolognaFiere. Again, this year, a large number of companies will be taking part: already, there are in excess of participating 2,000 exhibitors, testament to the Italian industrial sector’s strong competitive instinct in a highly professional and specialised context. After all, Italian manufacturing has reached a turning point. And this, in fact, in spite of the current issues due to shortages of raw material and soaring utility bill costs, with the latest Istat data showing a slight increase in confidence in the manufacturing business (+0.2 %) in addition to yearly industry turnover of +20.9 %. It is with an eye to the future, combined with the evolution of the manufacturing sector that Senaf organized this new trade fair event spanning 92,000 square metres of exhibition space, divided into 13 halls which include just as many theme-based exhibitions, as well as 16 special initiatives. With a programme developed across three themes inspired by the pillars for growth in key 4.0; education, digitalisation and sustainability, visitors on their journey through the exhibition halls will have an important opportunity to learn about the main technological innovations in the field of industrial processes, both in the exhibition itself as well as in the demonstration areas.

Even in 2022 we are seeing manufacturing companies eager to take part” MECSPE has proven to be a format that companies really appreciate, thanks to an even more innovative programme capable of meeting their needs,” comments Maruska Sabato, MECSPE Project Manager -With this new edition, once again, we have innovated the visitors’ in-show experience with the main initiative, the MECSPE Live Academy, dedicated to professional training, as well as the new space, the Facilitated Finance Plaza, created in cooperation with Innova Finance, to support companies in their growth path towards 4.0. And the novelties don’t just end there; this year MECSPE will be the centre of international meetings for local businesses.

This year, in fact, at MECSPE, the Unioncamere Emilia-Romagna is promoting individual meetings between Emilia-Romagna companies and manufacturing operators from countries that are important for Italian exports, such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey.

Thus, it is not only an exhibition, but it also provides the whole manufacturing chain numerous opportunities to meet and explore, thanks specifically to special initiatives and conferences by high-profile speakers, who will guide the public along the path of discovery of innovative solutions for business growth. With this spirit in mind, on June 9th, MECSPE will launch a new “core” exhibition; the MECSPE LIVE ACADEMY, which will cover an area of 2,000 m2, thanks to the support of companies and no less than six out of the eight national Competence Centres set up by Mise to help companies in their digital transformation process: Artes 4.0, Bi-Rex, Cim 4.0, Made, Smact e Start4.0. Exploring the MECSPE LIVE ACADEMY, entrepreneurs and visitors of all ages, including students aged 18 to 24, will be able to gain first-hand knowledge of these companies and become fully immersed in short training sessions to get an inside view of the impact of each technology on the production system in the digital factory; a journey discovering the fundamental skills for industrial development. In fact, according to the latest MECSPE Observatory, seven out of 10 SMEs have already hired, trained or plan to integrate new personnel with appropriate skills to achieve the transformation 4.0, but only 51% of them identify staff skillsets as essential for growth. The demonstration area will be managed directly by the Competence Centres, and it will be possible to physically touch the most innovative projects developed with these companies. What’s more, the MECSPE LIVE ACADEMY will not just end with the exhibition, but will continue in the months following the event with online courses on the same topics, in cooperation with the Accademia Tecniche Nuove

Nonetheless, the development of the manufacturing sector depends not only on upgrading internal skills, but also on the ability of companies to position themselves effectively in the market place It is not by chance that as many as eight out of ten companies stated that they would like to grow in the coming years; some want to increase in size, others to increase production or start a process of internationalization. In order to provide timely support to businesses wishing to procure appropriate financing, MECSPE is implementing the Facilitated Finance Plaza by Innova Finance. This is brand new for 2022 and involves a space where entrepreneurs can meet with specialist consultants to explore the financial solutions best suited to their needs.

Twenty events later, MECSPE has been a byword for technological innovation in industry, and it is now clear that without digitization we cannot mention growth. There are many companies that are digitizing their processes, particularly investing in cybersecurity, collaborative robotics and the Internet of Things. In this regard, MECSPE is planning the Simulation Summit, the first independent Italian conference on CAE Simulation in the industrial sector, and for the seventh year in a row, the “Solution Award” also i.e. the Robotics Innovation Award to shine a light on the best industrial or service robotics applications created by Italian companies. This will focus on the synergy and close cooperation between robot manufacturer Yaskawa and system integrators – the Yaskawa Area System Integrator For the first time in 2022, Smart Products and Smart Manufacturing will be the focus of the MESAP area; the cluster dedicated to innovation realized by the Piedmont Region.

Particular focus will also be on the best company eco-sustainable solutions with the ECOfriendly Path – “I do more,” a journey of MECSPE exhibitors who engage in green and ecofriendly policies in their business strategies; their special attention to the environment, setting them apart. And again, with the Planning and Design Area by Materioteca, the topic of lightening materials, considered to be one of the foundational factors of sustainability, will be explored. The topic “enterprise and training” will also be discussed in the TMP Plaza by the eponymous Associazione italiana Tecnici delle Materie Plastiche [Italian Association of Plastics Technicians]and several members of its members at the event. The demonstration area of the plaza will feature the molding of a MUG from a thermoplastic material made from renewable raw materials.

The MECSPE’s Job Opportunities area is a meeting place dedicated to professional opportunities in the manufacturing industry and represents a concrete opportunity for matchmaking between job supply and demand. It consists of two different cores: the Agent Forum, dedicated to finding and securing meetings with commercial agents, and the YOUNG & CAREER, a meeting point between exhibiting companies involved in the search and selection of specialized personnel, and young graduates (18 – 25 years old) from vocational and technical colleges, technical high schools, universities, and post-graduate master’s programs.

Furthermore, MECSPE 2022 will devote ample space to the Startup Factory the area designed to foster dialogue between start-ups and small, medium and large enterprises. At the same time as MECSPE, METEF, the international expo for the aluminium, foundry and die-casting, processing, finishing and end-use industries, with a series of initiatives focused on the importance of the circular economy in industrial processes will be running.

Numerous trade associations will also take part in MECSPE 2022, some with dedicated areas, such as the Confartigianato Village, much like the one run by Ascomut, the Ascomut Village, which was at MECSPE for more than 15 editions. Finally, there will be no shortage of associations which have supported MECSPE for years, such as AIDAM (Italian Association of Automation and Mechatronics), CNA Production and Collective Apindustria Brescia.
